website FAQ

We have been developing websites since 2009 and have developed an effective process that helps us collaborate with our clients to create a successful end result.

I’ve never made a website before. How does your process work?

That’s ok. We’ve worked with lots of people who have never worked on a website before and we’re happy helping you through the process. You can learn about it here.

How much does a website cost?

The cost of a website—like the cost of a house or car—depends on on various factors.  Our website projects generally start in the $4,000 range for basic business sites and range upwards depending on your needs.

How long does it take to design and build a website?

A basic website typically takes four to six weeks, but the time it takes depends on the size and complexity of your site and the quality of the content you have ready to go.

Do I need my own domain name and web hosting?

Yes. We can work with your existing provider or can recommend one that can get you started.

Will my website work on mobile devices and tablets?

Yes.

What is a content management system?

A content management system (or CMS) is a tool that simplifies the process of managing website content such as text, photography, navigation, blog posts and similar elements without the need of technical skills or software. All you need is a web browser and an internet connection.

What are standard functions and features on your websites?

Any website you purchase from us will be responsive (designed to work for desktop, tablet, and mobile use) in addition to being easy to manage in terms of adding or revising content or pages. We will also install and test elements such as Google Analytics, a footer, a navbar, maps, a blog, slideshows, newsletter signup, and Facebook feeds.

In terms of content and design, we will create an overarching visual and messaging concept that ties the site together and install components such as Google Fonts that make it look visually distinctive and that fit your brand.

We will also give you a helping hand with content in the form of handing the copywriting for the home page and usually a few other key pages, but will also provide you with a framework that helps you “fill in the blanks” to publish the site.

What happens if I think of new things to add to the site as we are working on the site?

New functions or features that come to mind once a contract is signed will be deferred until the site is complete per the original plan and schedule.  We are sensitive to the role that scope creep plays in making site design more complicated, expensive, and time-consuming that it should be.

It may be that the ideas you have can be implemented by adding new pages. The nature of a content management system means that it can be easy to revise the the site in the form of pages, copywriting, or photography. Once you have access to the site,  you can easily update it as much as you want.

What do I own once the site is complete?

You will have admin access to the site we’ve created for you and will be able to manage it and the people you choose to access it. Themes or plugins we purchase while we work on the site will be purchased on accounts you own. Some plugins may require additional costs for updating. It will be your choice to pay for these additional costs.

What happens after the site goes live?

Often there is a settling in period as you become familiar with the site. In addition, there may be a few wrinkles to be resolved in how the site appears on different devices and browsers. For this reason, we provide ongoing support for the site for three months after site launch.

Do you provide training?

Yes.

Can you help me with social media and email marketing?

Yes. Many forms of social media integration (such as a Facebook or twitter feed or email signup) are standard on websites we make. For ongoing social media planning or content development, we may help you directly or refer you to one of our partners who specialize in these areas.

What is search engine optimization (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimization helps to get your website higher up in the search results on search engines such as Google. The higher up you are the more traffic (and customers) you’re likely to get.

There are many aspects that go into achieving good SEO, and one of the most important is the key words on your website. Focusing on well written, keyword rich and appropriate content is the key.

Do you write the content for my site?

Yes but typically not all of your content. We often write the content on the home page and a few other key pages we include as part of our agreement with you before beginning the site design. We provide a framework for the other pages that simplify the process of writing the other pages. If you want help with creating content for your website, we can help you or refer you to one of our partners.

Can you design my logo or create a brand for me?

Yes.

What are the extra costs?

Our website costs include the purchase of a theme and a handful of plugins we use on most of our sites. There will be an extra cost if you elect to subscribe to online typography or specialty plugins. If so, your organization would have direct relationships with those vendors (instead of being billed by Shew Design). Specialty plugins can do anything from making your site faster, providing SEO benefits, and providing enhanced functionality.

Can you work within our existing brand?

Yes, though we may need to invest in resources like online typography to ensure that your web presence is in alignment with your brand.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is your address on the internet. Typically this would be something like yourcompany.com.

What is web hosting?

Web hosting is a service that allows your website to be viewed on the Internet. It’s basically a computer housed in a data center that runs your website and email.
